Ellis Phillips MUSCATINE, Iowa - Ellis Phillips Jr., 75, of Muscatine, died, Friday, July 14, 2000, at Muscatine Care Center. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Martin will officiate. Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Genesis Hospice. Mr. Phillips was born March 12, 1925, in Webster Co., Mo., the son of Ellis and Georgia Hurst Phillips. He married Violet Jean Stroughmatt on April 16, 1949, in Iowa City. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing on the Mississippi River and had the nickname ''The Catfish King''. He retired from Red Jacket Sump Pump Company after 33 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Violet Phillips of Muscatine; a daughter, Patricia Phillips of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Jack, Clint and Ann Gould; two great-grandchildren, Dustin and Karrah; a sister, Katherine Brei and her husband, Ron, of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Floyd Phillips; and a sister, Ruth Cox. [more]
