Hyila Freeman JEFFERSON, Iowa #45;- Hyila Ramonia Freeman, 79, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Open Bible Church in Jefferson. The Rev. Aaron Loree and John Freeman officiated. Pallbearers were Mike Ayers, Ron Freeman, Matt Swaink, Dan Swaink, Rod Freeman and Phil Waldo. The grandchildren were honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Jefferson Cemetery. Memorials may be left at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Mrs. Freeman was born March 22, 1921, in Guthrie Center, the daughter of William Brooks and Harriette Brandon. She grew up in the Guthrie Center area, where she attended school. She was united in marriage to Leo E. Freeman on May 2, 1936. They were the parents of 11 children: Harriette, William, Arden, Ramonia, Wanda, Kathleen, John, Valeria, Jolena, Twila and David. They made their home in Guthrie Center for one year, then moved near the Bayard area. In 1939, they relocated to Jefferson. She worked with her husband on their farm. She also worked at Gilmore Cafe, Mary's Tea Room and the Country Club as a waitress. In her spare time, she enjoyed embroidering, sewing and baking bread....[more]

e was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed puzzles. She was a longtime member of the Open Bible Church. Her family and church were a very important part of her life. Survivors include three sons, Arden Freeman and his wife, Barb, of Jefferson, John Freeman and his wife, MaryAnn, of Ottumwa and David Freeman and his wife, Susan, of Ames; seven daughters, Harriette Ayers and her husband, Fred, of Carroll, Ramonia Waldo and her husband, Doug, of Jefferson, Wanda Richards and her husband, Kenneth, of Muscatine, Kathleen Swaink and her husband, Keith, of Riverton, Valeria West and her husband, Gary, of Jefferson, Jolena Olson and her husband, Rick, of Indianola and Twila Nelson and her husband, Larry, of Madrid; 35 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; one sister, Mary Mount of Bondurant; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Freeman of St. Charles; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, William Brooks; her mother, Harriette Brandon; her husband, Leo Freeman; a son, William, on Sept. 13, 1994; one brother, Raymond; one sister, Irene Sweeney; and two grandchildren, Sherry Ayers Booth and Ryan William Freeman.
