Marie Havel IOWA CITY, Iowa - Marie Havel, 91, Iowa City, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City, after a brief illness. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City. The Rev. Rebecca Carver will officiate. After the services at Oaknoll, a luncheon will be held. Burial will be at Riverside Public Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home. The Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Havel was born on May 24, 1910, in Washington County, the daughter of John and Bertha Carr Tener. She married George Havel on Jan. 10, 1965. She was a 1928 graduate of Iowa City High School and attended the University of Iowa, Washington University of St. Louis, the University of Missouri, the University of Minnesota and the school at the Willard Park Hospital in New York City. She graduated from the St. Luke's School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill. in 1934. She was employed at the Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., the University of Missouri as a field nurse for the state and was the director of the Blosser Home for crippled chil...[more]

n in Marshall, Mo. During World War II. From 1948-1965 she served as the Director of Nursing Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Riverside; Eastern Star; and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include two stepchildren, Jean Fox and husband Lyle and Mary Anne Swailes and husband Richard, all of Ainsworth; stepdaughter-in-law, Sheryl Havel of Camdenton, Mo.; stepson-in-law, Wayne Strabala of Coggan; many nieces and nephews; stepgrandchildren great-stepgrandchildren; and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Helen Tener and Wilma Slawson; a brother, John Tener; and two stepchildren, Nancy Strabala and Tom Havel.
