Howard Hamilton CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. #45;- Howard Laverne Hamilton, 85, Charlottesville, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at University of Virginia Hospital. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Lone Tree Cemetery, Lone Tree, with full military rites conducted by the Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree. Mr. Hamilton was born July 20, 1916, in Lone Tree, the son of Harry Stephen and Gertrude Ruth Shibley Hamilton. He married Alison Phillips Dec. 22, 1945, in Highland Park, Ill. She preceded him in death July 30, 1972. He then married Elizabeth Burnley-Bentley June 18, 1975. He attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps, Army Infantry. He was graduated as Second Lieutenant earning his bachelor of arts degree with highest distinction in 1937. The following year he earned his master of science degree. He did post graduate work at the University of Rochester, N.Y., 1938-40, and received his doctor of philosophy degree from John Hopkins University, Maryland, in 1941. to the Department of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., where he served as medical research officer, 1941-45. He was promoted to Captain and served an additional 32 years in the Army Reserve, retiring as full Colonel. In 1946, he joined the faculty at Iowa State University, Ames, as professor of zoology. In 1962, he moved to Charlottesville and taught at the University of Virginia as professor of Biology, retiring in 1982 as professor emeritus. Survivors include his second wife; from his first marriage a son, Dr. Phillips Howard Hamilton and wife Patricia and their four children of Massachusetts and two daughters, Christina Fehlner and husband Dr. James Fehlner and their two daughters of Pennsylvania and Martha McCubbin and husband Dr. Robert McCubbin and their son and daughter of Virginia; from his second marriage two daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine; a sister, Florence Bozek and husband Dr. Thad T. Bozek of Iowa, their children and grandchildren; a mother-in-law Mrs. E. Marshall Burnley-Bentley, her brother, Hardin Jack Burnley and wife Dolores, all of Charlottesville; and many cousins.
