WEST DES MOINES, Iowa #45;- Vernon Alfred Brown, 70, West Des Moines, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Kavanagh House, West Des Moines. Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, West Des Moines. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at the Rock Island Arsenal Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Central Iowa or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Brown was born in Muscatine. He lived in Muscatine for 33 years before moving to Des Moines. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1998. He served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church; past president of the Iowa Press Photographers Association; National Press Photographers Association. He won many awards with his photo work. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and making woodcrafts. Survivors include his wife Agnes Brown of West Des Moines; two sons, David Brown of Springfield, Mo. and Jon Brown of Des Moines; a daughter, Jana Dupuy of Clive; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers, his parents and his grandparents. [more]
