Juanita Sands FREDONIA, Iowa #45;- Juanita Sands, 72, Fredonia, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, after an extended illness. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cathy Whitlatch will officiate. Pallbearers are Joshua Sands, Jake Sands, Amos Garrett, Bobbi Jo Garrett, Anna Sands, Derek Halstead, Mike Jay, Mike Pavey and Dan Peters. Honorary pallbearers are John Thomas Sands and Jenna Renae Sands. Burial will be at the Columbus City Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church after the burial. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. A memorial has been established for the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church or Louisa County Ambulance. Mrs. Sands was born on Dec. 1, 1930, in New Boston, Ill., the daughter of Thomas C. and Wilda M. Jebb Carey. She married Samuel H. Sands on July 7, 1951, in Columbus Junction. United Methodist Church; past president of the United Methodist Women; and past president, vice president and treasurer of the Cedar Crest Golf Club Ladies. She was a member and treasurer of the Lions Club, and was a 31-year member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and served as their president from 1977-1979. She was the city clerk for Fredonia from 1966-2003. She also worked in the secretary's office for Louisa County Fair for several years. Survivors include her husband; a son, Thomas Sands of Columbus Junction; two daughters, Rita Garrett and Debbie Paetz and her husband, Jeff, all of Columbus Junction; six grandchildren, Joshua D. Sands and his wife, Christi, Jacob W. Sands, Anna M. Sands, Amos M. Garrett and her wife, Julie, Bobbi Jo Garrett, and Derek P. Halstead; two great-grandchildren, John Thomas Sands and Jenna Renae Sands; a sister, Erma A. Copelan and her husband, Earl, of Columbus Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cloyce Carey; and a granddaughter, Brandi Jo Garrett.
