Virginia I. Ostenson

Virginia "Virgie" I. Ostenson was born on March 13, 1926, in Echo, Minnesota to the late Ray J. and Inga (Hustad) Volstad. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at a young age. In 1932, she moved with her family to Granite Falls and this is where Virgie received her education; graduating in the Class of 1944. After graduating, she worked as the secretary for the Granite Falls City Clerk's Office. On April 8, 1947, Virgie was united in marriage to Orin "Ozzie" Ostenson in Granite Falls. Shortly after being married, in 1948, they moved to Appleton and then back to Granite Falls before moving to Windom in 1957. They purchased a variety store from Art Hasle. Together they expanded the store into ladies and children's clothing and gifts. Virgie was a very efficient bookkeeper and buyer. Ostenson's and the Village Shop were in business for thirty-three years until Virgie and Ozzie retired in 1990. After retiring, Virgie and Ozzie continued to make their home in Windom. For the past four and one-half years, Virgie had been in poor health with many hospitalizations and surgeries. Ozzie was a faithful caregiver who never tired of helping his wife. gie went home to be with the Lord at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom at the wonderful age of 84. Virgie was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Windom where she taught Sunday school, VBS, was a church hostess and recently it was her honor to be a Deaconess. Virgie believed in the power of prayer and spent a lot of time praying for her family, friends and her church. Virgie was also active in her community as a volunteer at Winfair where she listened to children read, and a volunteer at the food shelf. Virgie enjoyed reading, knitting and talking on the phone to her children and grandchildren. Her greatest love was her husband, Ozzie. She called him her rock. She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Virgie is survived by her loving husband of sixty-three years, Ozzie Ostenson of Windom; two children, James (Patty) Ostenson of Edina, Lori (David) Johnson of Windom; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Andrea (Duane) Sollie and their children, Ella, Greta and Torsten, Michael (Lisa) Ostenson, Kaitlin, Rebekah and Megan Miller; and Benjamin and Daniel Johnson; sister-in-law, Ovidia Hegna; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Virgie is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Mary Kay Miller; two brothers, Elmo (Marian) Volstad and Morris (Thelma) Volstad. Blessed be the memory of Virgie Ostenson.
