Lester Henderson WEST LIBERTY, Iowa #45;- Lester H. Henderson, 80, West Liberty, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 9, at West Liberty United Methodist Church. The Rev. Susen LeBlanc will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established. Mr. Henderson was born June 13, 1923, near West Liberty, the son of Orville and Ruth Hime Henderson. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1940 and later attended the University of Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II where he proudly served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years. He married Marilyn Duncan Nov. 7, 1947, in West Liberty. He had worked in the ready mix concrete business his entire life. First working with his uncle Skip Pantel at Pantel Ready Mix, Bill Grunder then purchased the business and most recently Hahn Ready Mix. Following his retirement he worked for Joe's Backhoe and Trucking as well as taking care of many of the neighbors yards, homes and sidewalks. ...[more]

life was spent being active in the community. In his earlier years he served as a scout leader and was member of the West Liberty Booster Club. He was a member of West Liberty United Methodist Church; 34-year member of the West Liberty Fire Department; 50-year member of the Mansell Phillips American Legion Post 509, where he served as finance officer for many years; was on the Board of Adjustments board in West Liberty; and was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Denise 'Dee' Goldesberry and husband, John, of West Liberty; three sons, Jeff Henderson and wife, Annette, Mark Henderson and wife, Melody, and Scott Henderson and wife, Jackie, all of West Liberty; a sister, Wilma Weinard of North Liberty; seven grandchildren, Brook Noring and husband, Chris, Emily Goldesberry, Cole Henderson, Brian Goldesberry, Hannah Henderson, Elliot Henderson and Mylei Jo Henderson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Willard; and a sister, Evelyn Leggins.
