James Horton IOWA CITY, Iowa #45;- James Horton, 94, formerly of Conesville, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Greenwood Manor, Iowa City, after a lengthy illness. Private family services were held at Conesville Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Columbus Community Schools. Lensing Funeral Services, Iowa City, handled the arrangements. Mr. Horton was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Conesville, the son of Clarence Butler Horton and Nelle Robison Horton. He married Armilda Emerson Sept. 28, 1937. He graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1928. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Corps Man in the European Theater. He was the proud grandson of two Civil War veterans. On Aug. 1, 1932, he was appointed clerk at the post office in Conesville, he became acting postmaster Aug. 20, 1934, and later postmaster on Aug. 14, 1935. He continued in that position until 1959. He retired from Postal Service Oct. 31, 1969. He was also a long time School Board member of the Conesville School District. ; two children, George Horton and wife, Midge, of Vining and Susan Hill and husband, Jack, of Long Grove; grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Hill of Iowa City, Brian Hill of Long Grove, James Hill and wife, Mary, of Eldridge and Katie Skorupski and husband, Chris, of Dubuque; and great-grandchildren, Chris George Skorupski, Alaina Hill and Rowan Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Francis Proctor Horton.
