Donald Swailes Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2, Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Riverside. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, funeral home. RIVERSIDE, Iowa #45;- Donald Swailes, 82, Riverside, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at his home after an extended illness. Carol Kaalberg will officiate the services. Casket bearers are Dennis Swailes, Doug Swailes, Duane Chalupa, Larry Grecian, John Patterson and Jeremy Patterson. Honorary casket bearers are Mick Graf, Don Schomberg, Kenny Wieland and Eugene Steele. Burial will be at Riverside Public Cemetery, Riverside, with full military rites conducted by the Riverside Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6414. After the burial, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Riverside VFW. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Washington County Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Swailes was born Jan. 25, 1923, on the family farm in Highland Township, the son of James and Helen Dvorak Swailes. He married Theresa Cooney and they were later divorced. He was a member of the Riverside VFW Post 6414 and an honorary member of the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and dancing. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Riverside; two sons, Doug and Dennis Swailes, both of Riverside; four stepchildren, Barb Fountain and husband Pat of Mount Pleasant, Pat Hirt and husband Daryl of Riverside, Vicki Johnson and husband Paul of Washington and John Burich and wife Becky of Coralville; six grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 10 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ernest Swailes and wife Norma of Riverside; and a sister, Marie Shalla and husband Norman of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents.
