Yancey, 22, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Nov. 4, 2005, when insurgent forces detonated an improvised explosive device directly adjacent to the armored Humvee he was driving in Baghdad, Iraq. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. He was born Jan. 4, 1983, in Cedar Rapids. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha until his family moved to South Carolina in 1991. He graduated from Goose Creek High School in 2001, where he participated in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program, band, chorus, soccer and football. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2003 and was qualified as a HVAC maintainer. He was assigned to the U.S. Army's 26th Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.
