Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, with 7:30 p.m. Masonic services, Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, 201 Pedersen St., West Branch. Iowa Stewart E. Mather, 80, West Branch, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, after an brief illness. The Rev. Ruth Blayer will officiate the services. Burial, with military honors, will be at the Springdale Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Mr. Mather was born Sept. 4, 1925, near Springdale, the son of Robert K. and Helen Reed Mather. He married Mildred Whiting on Aug. 6, 1955, in Mount Pleasant. He attended Springdale Schools and was an U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean conflict. He had farmed in the Springdale area all his life. He was an active member of Springdale United Methodist Church, Rochester Masonic Lodge No. 24, Order of Eastern Star, Royal Arch Masons of West Liberty and the West Branch American Legion. He was also a member of the West Branch Kiwanis Club, following the closing of the West Branch Club he joined the Iowa City Old Capital Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Julie of West Branch; a sister, Barbara Parker and husband Roy of Tijeras, N.M.; a brother, Edward Mather and wife Mary of Okemos, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Stewart Mather; and a brother, Richard.
