50 years. He graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1946 and subsequently attended Iowa State University for the Agricultural Winter Session. He entered the United States Army on Aug. 13, 1951, to serve during the Korean conflict. He served on the Lone Tree Community School Board from 1966-72 during the passage of the school bond which allowed for construction of the new gym. He also was a member of the Johnson County Pork Board, Johnson County Extension Council, St. Mary's Parish Council, Farm Bureau Board, Lone Tree American Legion Post 457 and chairman of the Fremont Township Mercy Hospital Fund-raising Campaign. He was a life-long farmer who worked on his family farm until his death. He embraced farming as more than an occupation, but a lifestyle. His true love of agriculture was demonstrated by his dedication and excitement for his work. He would talk farming to anyone that would lend a listening ear. He was a dedicated husband and great family man who continually made sacrifices for those close to him. He was always willing and ready to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed attending many school and community activities, especially those of his grandchildren. Some of his happiest times were during the holidays or other family gatherings. Throughout his high school and Army years, he loved to participate in all sports. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling, dancing with his wife and socializing with his many friends. He lived a life which overflowed with honesty, integrity, dignity and modesty. Survivors include his wife; a son, Thomas Charles and wife Jane of Lone Tree; a daughter, Terri Lynn Sheetz of Iowa City; grandchildren, Arin of Washington D.C. and Michael Hotz, currently attending Iowa State University, Ames; a sister, RoseMary Lewis; a brother-in-law, Leonard VeDepo; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Jennings; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Sue Hotz; brothers-in-law, Edgar Lewis, Raymond VeDepo, LuVerne VeDepo, William VeDepo and Bob Jennings; and sisters-in-law, Beatrice Meade and Gladys VeDepo.
