graduate of Mercy Hospital's School of Nursing, Iowa City. After graduation and nursing certification, she joined the Red Cross in 1941. Soon after, she transitioned into the U.S. Army Nurse Corps of the Regular Army. She served as a commissioned officer and her specialty was psychiatric care. She was an active participant in all of St. Mary's church activities and assisted greatly as an adult leader in both Girl and Boy Scout community programs. In addition, she was an extremely active participant in Iowa Republican Party activities. She was also an active member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Billie L. Nickolan and husband, Arlen, of Riverside; a son, Gordon B. "Brad" Denton II and wife, Isabel, of Boulder, Colo.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Searfoorce and husband, Bill, of Denver, Colo., and Gordon "Brad" Denton III and Vita Denton, both of Boulder; three brothers, Bernard W. O'Conner and wife, Lenore, of Iowa City, Leroy E. O'Conner and William O'Connor and wife, Ellen, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; four sisters, Verena L. Roscoe of Albuquerque, Frances M. Duwa of Riverside, Kathleen Hernandez and husband, Joe, of Cedar Rapids and JoAnn Laures and husband, Ray, of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
