John "Jack" P. Hack

John Peter "Jack" Hack, 91, of New London, died Monday, September 13, at his beloved "Hack Shack", rural New London. Mr. Hack was born November 25, 1918 in Chicago, the son of John Peter, Sr. and Jessie Blanche Nichols Hack. On January 16, 1946 he married Jane Gwendolyn Hayes in Sanford, Florida. She died August 28, 1991. He served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in the Marshall Islands. Mr. Hack worked as a brakeman for the railroad on the Wabash Cannonball for 30 years. He was active in buying and selling antiques, an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He also sold wood burning stoves and earned the nickname "Stoveman Jack". He was a Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cubs fan. He attended Tildon Technical School and Wilson Junior College, Chicago. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of New London VFW Post 7641 and the American Legion in Chicago. Mr. Hack is survived by one son, Pete (Debbie) Hack of New London; two daughters, Susan Hattendorf of Traverse City, Michigan and April Jackson of Frankfort, Illinois; one sister, Marge Kearns of California; six grandchildren and three great-grandsons. fe. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, September 16 at Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville. Chaplain Jim Luder will officiate. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Thursday morning at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family greeting friends from 1:00 to 2:45, followed by a procession to the cemetery. A memorial has been established for Alzheimer's research.
