He served as an instructor in the Navel Training Program at the Iowa State University during World War II. Following the war, he was employed as an electrical engineer at Stanley Consultants for 31 years, retiring in 1975 as Vice-President and Senior Electrical Engineer. He was a Registered Electrical Engineer in 12 states and a member of several engineering organizations. He had written several technical papers and an electrical engineering textbook. Gene had a lifelong interest in genealogy, and had compiled an extensive personal family history. He enjoyed playing golf and was a conservationist at his tree farm here in Muscatine, where the family enjoyed many picnics. Gene and Arlene never missed an Iowa Hawkeye home football game. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, University of Iowa Presidents Club, the Muscatine 33 Club, Elk's Lodge No. 304, and a 40 year member of the Geneva Golf and Country Club. Survivors include one son, John D. Lister and wife, Mary, of Fremont, Wisconsin; two daughters, Mary Jones of Muscatine and Kathleen Snider and husband, Barry, of River Hills (Milwaukee), Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Angie Jones, Mike Jones, Becky Zeck, Jason Snider and Emily Snider; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Jirak, Danielle Jones, Cooper Zeck, Gabrielle Jones and Sawyer Zeck; one sister, Marguerite Tillman of Costa Mesa, California; one sister-in-law, Catherine Nier of Landover Hills, Maryland and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
