Lavern Nelson ALEDO, Illinois -- Lavern D. Nelson, 89, a resident of Heritage Woods in Aledo, formerly of Joy, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at the Mercer County Hospital in Aledo, Illinois. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2007, at the United Methodist Church, Joy, Illinois. Burial is in the Peniel Cemetery in rural Joy, Illinois. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2007, at the Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, Illinois. A memorial fund will be established at the funeral home. Mr. Nelson was born April 18, 1918, in Eliza Township in Mercer County, Illinois, the son of Orville and Edna Desch Nelson. He married Marguerite A. Hall Feb. 22, 1948, in Keithsburg, Illinois. He attended Winter's Creek School and graduated from Joy High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army Veteran Medical Corps during WWII. He farmed the family farm in Joy his entire life. He was a member and elder of the Joy Presbyterian Church, prior to its closing, and a member of the Joy United Methodist Church, where he was actively involved in different capacities. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Nelson of Aledo, Illinois; three daughters, Gloria Nelson of East Moline, Donna DeKeyrel and her husband, Rene, of Illinois City and Rita Nelson Herbert of Moline; three grandsons, Jason Baraks of Moline, Edward DeKeyrel and Andrew DeKeyrel and his wife, Jodi, all of Illinois City; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Baraks and Evan and Emma DeKeyrel; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Nelson and her family of Joy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lyle Nelson.
