The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Masonic services will be at 5:45 p.m. by the Washington Lodge. WAPELLO, Iowa -- John Joseph Schantz, 67, of Wapello, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at his home. The Rev. Scott Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Mr. Schantz was born Aug. 27, 1940, in Wapello, the son of Dillon D. and Margaret "Peg" Edmondson Schantz. He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1958 and attended Mankato State University for a year, where he played football. He married Karen Trier Dec. 28, 1962. He worked as a millwright with Local 2158 of Moline and was a carpenter with Local 1260 of Iowa City. Earlier, he farmed, operated the Shell Station in Wapello and his family owned and operated the Grandview Service Station and the Grandview Country Cafe. His life and activities were always centered around his family. He is survived by his wife; his mother; six children, Cindy and Mike Singleton of Wapello, Greg and Cathy Greiner of Wapello, Jeanne and Rod Fry of Winterville, Ga., Chris Spate of Belvidere, Ill., Julie Rich of Columbia, Mo., and John Jr. and JoEllen Schantz of Wapello; 16 grandchildren; a brother, Don and Mary Schantz of Ainsworth; and a sister, Judy and John Grover of Washington. He was preceded in death by his father.
