Ringgold County, Iowa and attended Delphos school. Most of his schooling was at Redding where he graduated the valedictorian of his class at Redding High School in 1952. In 1956 he graduated from Simpson College at Indianola with majors in physical education and social studies. He taught one year of school in Ferguson, Iowa before being drafted into the U.S. Army in July of 1957. He was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany as a cryptologist. He was discharged in July of 1959. He taught a year at Cosgrove, Iowa and seven years at Menlo before coming to Wapello and retiring in June of 1997 after 39 years of teaching. He coached girls basketball for 18 years, started the girls volleyball at Wapello in 1979 and coached volleyball for 18 years. He received his Master's from the University of Iowa in secondary and primary education administration in 1970. He is survived by his three children, Kenneth and Angela Austin stationed at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas and currently serving in Iraq, Kelly and Monte Lanz of Oakville, and Karen Austin of Carlisle; 11 grandchildren; three step-children, Dallas McConahay of Sacramento, California, Tami and Bruce Prier of West Burlington, and Jona and Dan Paulson of Vancouver, Washington; two step-grandchildren; a sister, Yvonne Galloway of Villisca; and a brother, Bill and Marlys Austin of Columbus Junction. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorthy; and a brother, Doyle.
