GEORGE SHEPLEY MUSCATINE, Iowa - George A. Shepley, 86, of Muscatine, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Unity Hospital. A private family memorial service will be held with a private family burial. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. George was born on April 30, 1922, in Joliet, Illinois, the son of Merton and Hazel Shaw Shepley. He married Norma Sprague on June 6, 1944, in Washington, D.C. He was veteran of the US Marine Corp, serving during World War II in the South Pacific and Japan. The family moved to Muscatine in 1963, when George accepted the position of President and CEO of Muscatine Bank and Trust which he held until 1966, when the bank became First National Bank of Muscatine. He continued as President and CEO until 1989. field from 1986 through April of 2003; he served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Iowa First Bancshares Corp. from 1983 through 1996, and also served as Chairman of the Board of Iowa First Bancshares Corp. from 1983 through April 2003. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Rotary International, Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and the Muscatine Development Corporation; and Geneva Golf and Country Club. He served as a former president of the United Way of Muscatine and was very committed to Muscatine Senior Resources, having a building named in his honor. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and a member of the I Club, University of Iowa Alumni Association, and a lifetime member of the President's Club of the University of Iowa Foundation. In 1968, he was named Dad of the Year by the University of Iowa. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 64 years, Norma Shepley of Muscatine; two sons, Richard Shepley and wife, Janet, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Brian Shepley and wife, Teresa, of Fruitland; two daughters, Gail Lande and husband, Robert, of Muscatine, and Nancy Mangrum and husband Mike of Galena, Illinois; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
