James D. Novak

James D. Novak, of Antigo, died Friday, September 10, 2021, at home under the care of his family and LeRoyer Hospice. He was 85 years old. He was born on November 25, 1935, in Antigo, a son of Joseph and Mary (Jirovec) Novak, Sr. He married Emily Sveda on December 26, 1964, at St. John Catholic Church, Antigo. She survives. He enlisted in the United States Navy on January 13, 1954, was stationed in the Philippines, and was discharged in 1958. Following military service he worked at American Motors in Kenosha for several years. Returning to Antigo he sold insurance for a short time then was employed by the City of Antigo as Building Inspector for 22 years, retiring in 1985. As a young man he sang and played guitar with the Blahnik Brothers Orchestra as well as his own group, The Three J's. His joy came from making violins. He learned the art from third generation violin maker Carl Becker, Jr., and made his first violin in 1994. His passion for the instrument continued to this day. Survivors including his wife are a son, S'ean (Kelly) Novak, Antigo; two daughters, Lisa (Mike) Deacy, Hudson, Julie (Mike) Warning, Weston; two grandchildren, Haley Novak, Antigo, Tyler (Bri) Deacy, Baldwin; three brothers, Victor (Marcy) Novak, Milwaukee, Rev. Thomas Novak, Milwaukee, William (Joni) Novak, Antigo; a sister, Margaret (Bruce) Brown, Milwaukee. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph (Mary) Novak, Jr., and Gerald Novak. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Hoffmann officiating. Burial will take place in Queen of Peace Cemetery where the Antigo veterans will conduct military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Bradley Funeral Home and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A parish wake service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday and the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
