Robert A. Kaalberg WEST LIBERTY, Iowa - Robert A. Kaalberg, 81, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, West Liberty. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nichols. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday July 10, 2009, with a wake service at 7 p.m. Friday, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established. Robert was born on November 16, 1927, in Nichols, the son of John W. and Louise Healy Kaalberg. He attended country schools in rural Nichols, graduated from Nichols High School and attended St. Ambrose University. He served as a corporal during the Korean War in Anchorage, Ala. in the 42nd engineers' construction battalion from 1951-53. He married Geraldine Wolters on March 20, 1952, in West Liberty. He worked for Chown Appliance and became owner of Kaalberg Plumbing, Heating and Electric. He was also employed as maintenance supervisor for the West Liberty School District. 9, Moose Lodge, VFW in Muscatine, and served as a Nichols volunteer firefighter. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his cabin on the Mississippi River, feeding wildlife, and bowling in Moose and American Legion tournaments. He is survived by his wife, Gerrie Kaalberg of West Liberty; four daughters, Cathy Cox of West Liberty, Linda White and husband, Dave, of West Liberty, Annette OnieĀ Carter of Maineville, Ohio, and Paula Cooney and husband, Pat, of Muscatine; two sons, David Kaalberg and wife, Amy, of Nichols, and Phil Kaalberg of Columbus Junction; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Steinocher of Nichols, and Patricia Matthews of Iowa City. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.
