He belonged to Trinity Episcopal Church, Eastern Iowa P.O.W.s, Caterpillar Club, and C amp; O Canal Association, and he was an avid flower gardener and always enjoyed showing his gardens to any and all that passed by. Robert was a veteran of World War II, serving as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, 15th Air Force, 515th Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, and a Bombardier on a B-24. He was shot down over Austria on May 24, 1944, and spent over a year as a P.O.W. in Germany. Those left to honor his memory include his son, Brian H. Walter and wife, Kay, of Muscatine; a daughter-in-law, Kim Walter of Ottumwa; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gerald D. Walter and Donald P. Walter, both of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Thomas M. Walter on April 14, 2004; one sister; and three brothers.
