oux City. Al was a member of many community boards and committees. Most notably the South Sioux City Council from 1992 - present. He was the chairman of the Public Works Committee and until his death he was the council President. Other committees he served on were: Knight of Columbus Grand Knight/Supreme Delegate, St. Michael's parish council, SSC parks and recreation board, SIMPCO, Race for Hope Committee, June E. Nylen Citizen's Advisory Board, Mercy Medical Citizen Advisory Board, Freedom Park committee, Cardinal Festival committee, Founder of the Mighty Mo road race, Instrumental in developing the bike/hike trail system in SSC, past President of the Dolphin swim club, Missouri River Runners Club, Tri-state Trails, Home Builders Association, and he was one of the original founders of the South Sioux City Convention and Visitors Bureau. He enjoyed trains and train art, woodworking, politics, Facebook, watching his grandkids' games, travel, walking/running, biking, family geneology, feeding the birds and squirrels. Mostly he loved interacting with people. He always said he had the best job in the world because he could drive around and visit with people and he got paid to do it. Al was a cherished husband, father, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, and father-in-law. His family is better for the opportunities he provided for each of us. He bravely fought cancer for the past 5 years. Those who were blessed to know him, spoke often of his strength, faith, and love for his family. Survivors include his wife, Ardel Bengtson of South Sioux City; son, Chris Bengtson (Jennifer) of South Sioux City; daughters, Shannon Leiting (Lynn) of Gretna and Mickey Carlson (Dan) of Alliance; grandchildren: Trevor, Elle, Kate, and Faith Leiting, Dylan and Drew Carlson with a fourth grandson due in February; sister, Gloria Fornes (Don); brother, John Bengtson; sisters/brothers-in-law, Darrel and Lois Lund, Manny and Marlys Husebo; many nieces and nephews. Allen was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim Bengtson. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to Hospice of Siouxland and the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
