Rex Wayne Sanger, 90, of Maquoketa, passed away on December 15, 2022 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa with his family by his side. A funeral mass will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the mass from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is in charge of the arrangements. Rex was born on February 17, 1932 in Maquoketa, Iowa and was the son of Ray and Christy Sanger (Buck). He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1949. He married Dorothy (Stevens), Sanger on March 27, 1953 at St. Joseph Church in Preston, Iowa. The couple resided in Maquoketa for 66 years before moving to DeWitt, Iowa. The couple raised three sons together Steven, Michael, and Joel. Rex served in the army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. Rex also worked as a truck driver for 25 years for Western Transportation in Clinton, Iowa. He then worked in maintenance for the CB Company in Maquoketa, Iowa for 10 years before retiring in 1995. d Safety instructor and was a certified NRA rifle and pistol instructor. He was active in the Boy Scouts with his oldest two sons. He was a devout Christian and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for his entire life. Rex enjoyed spending his time outdoors, hunting and fishing, gardening, wood working, trains and spending time with his family and grandchildren. His faith was very important to him. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Michael (Meg) Sanger of Las Vegas, NV, Joel (Susan) Sanger of DeWitt, IA; daughter-in-law, Ann (Giddings) Sanger of Camanche, IA; grandchildren, Kristen, Justin (Kristen), Megan, Steve "Andy" (Courtney), Jordan (Chayse), Jolene, and Jerri; great grandchildren, Nautica, Bode, Posy, Rhys, Remington, and Keena; and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Howard, Raymond, and Ray Jr., and his son Steven. The family would like to thank the DeWitt ambulance crew and the Genesis East Medical Center emergency department, intensive care unit and medical pulmonary unit staff for the exceptional care.
