Mary E. Downey, 90, of Marquette, passed away on Thursday evening, January 26, 2023 at U.P. Health System-Marquette. Mary was born on October 14, 1932 in Marquette to the late Walter and Myrtle (Stickney) Bashaw and was a lifelong Marquette resident. She was a 1950 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School. Mary was a longtime volunteer at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans. She was a past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 44 and was a past Exalter Ruler of Marquette Elks Lodge # 405. In Mary's own words, "I enjoyed golfing, bowling and darts........all poorly, but I enjoyed the camaraderie!" Mary was a member of St. Peter Cathedral as well as its altar society for many years. Survivors include two children Carolyn (Robert) Basal of Marquette and Edward (Elizabeth) Downey III of Leawood, KS; three grandchildren, Jennifer Kraska of Salisbury, NC, Julee (Michael) Kaurala of Marquette and Brian (Stephanie) Burnett of Bentonville, AR; four great grandchildren, Blake Burnett, Bryce Burnett, Brodie Burnett, and William Kaurala; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Mary's family will greet relatives and friends in the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral beginning on Friday, February 3rd from 1 p.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 3 p.m. in the cathedral with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately following the Mass in the parish hall. Inurnment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
