ESTELLE MATHEWS

Estelle Mathews, 91, of Marquette, died Saturday afternoon, February 4, 2023 at Michigan Veterans Home, D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette. Estelle was born on May 6, 1931 in Ishpeming, Michigan to the late Charles and Martha (Hakala) Poylio and was a lifelong area resident. She was employed for over 21 years as a bookkeeper at the former Acocks Medical Facility and was also previously employed in the payroll department at Northern Michigan University for 20 years. In her free time, Estelle enjoyed gardening (she was a master gardener), painting, drawing, knitting, crafts, and photography. She was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Bay. Survivors include one son, David (Susan) Savitski of Taiwan; three step-children, Pamela Strahl of Negaunee, Christopher Mathews of Big Bay and Curtis (Susan) Mathews of Marquette; 9 grandchildren, Jingshan and Jinghan Savitski; Ian Savitski, Katelyn (Mark) Loretti, Nolan Mathews, Demi Mathews, Jim Pearson, Stu Pearson, and Danielle Johnson; two great grandchildren, Cameron and Chloe Savitski. The Mathews family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, June 8th beginning at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Big Bay where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for both Estelle and her husband, Bob at 1 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider Michigan Veterans Home, D.J.
