Margaret Hammond Sellgren was born in Detroit, MI on May 5, 1935, and died in Sarasota, FL on February 25, 2024.

She attended Redford High School and graduated from the University of Michigan, followed by graduate studies at Wayne State University. Margaret taught both High School and Junior High School in Dearborn, MI, and on three separate occasions took groups of 25 students to France for an exchange program. Her family moved to Birmingham, MI in 1968, and Margaret began volunteer work shortly thereafter at the Institute for Advanced Pastoral Studies, where she subsequently took on the position of Financial Administrator, served on the Board of Directors and ultimately acted as Director when IAPS merged with the Ecumenical Theological Center. She next served as Associate Director of the International Visitors Council (affiliate of USAID, Detroit), then became Executive Director of the Michigan unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, from which she retired in 1998. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, MI, serving as a deacon, and was active in their Women's Association.

Margaret was a longtime member of the Junior Women's Association of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and served on their Board of Directors as well. Margaret and her family lived in the Birmingham/Bloomfield Village area for 47 years, where Margaret held memberships in two book clubs as well as the Village Club of Bloomfield Hills. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, and enjoyed sailing, playing tennis and classical piano.

After moving full-time to Sarasota in 2015, Margaret pursued her spiritual studies at Third Church of Christ, Scientist, and continued her dedication to music by joining the Sarasota Orchestra Association.

Her friends remember her for her quick wit, lively intellect and warm smile.

She is survived by her loving husband of more than 67 years James, her daughter Jennifer Miljan, her son Greg Sellgren and her granddaughters Elizabeth Miljan and Kathryn Miljan.

Memorials in Margaret's name may be made to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Third Church of Christ, Scientist of Sarasota, or the Sarasota Orchestra.
