James Monroe Poorbaugh passed quietly Friday, February 20, 2026. Born January 25, 1936 in Sylvia, KS to Earl and Mamie Butcher Poorbaugh, James married Virginia Nell Jones on July 2, 1960 in Excelsior Springs, MO.
Ashes will be scattered with Virginia's in Missouri and Kansas where they grew up and met.
James established A-1 Alarm Company, mastering many trades including telephone lineman, Local #89 Ironworker, construction, law enforcement, and locksmithing. He enjoyed recounting his exploits while stationed in Germany, trained his Husky to pull a scooter and was a marksman. He enjoyed conquering challenges!
His Army and IA National Guard service was commemorated by a 2024 honor flight to Washington DC.
He is survived by sister, Wana Lee Cox, 102, of Sterling, KS, daughter, Dee Ann (Roy) Stover of Hiawatha and David James (Ang) Poorbaugh of Cedar Rapids, grandsons and their families and was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, Patric Poorbaugh and sister, Merry Anne Lorimor.[more]
