Nick was born and raised in Remsen, Ia. where he graduated from St. Mary's High School. He married Shirley Frericks on June 26, 1954, and they made homes in McGregor, Rock Rapids, and Algona, IA. Nick served in the US Navy during the Korean War & was a lifetime member of VFW. Nick was active in his community as a volunteer fireman in McGregor, worked with the Boy Scouts of America, served two terms on Algona Community School Board, President of Chamber of Commerce & Algona Economic Development, Past President of Algona Country Club, served on Board of Directors of Iowa State Bank and Security State Bank, past President of Rock Rapids Kiwanis & Chamber of Commerce, and was President of the committee that established the Algona Prisoner of War Museum. esentative to start a lineman's program at Northwest Iowa Vocational School, General Manager of McGregor Municipal Utilities 1960 to 1963, General Manager Rock Rapids Municipal Utilities 1963 to 1971, and Manager of Algona Municipal Utilities from 1971 to 2000. Nick was active in his church serving as president of the finance board, as a lector, served as president of committee to build the parish activity center & rectory, member of the KCs - 3rd & 4th Degree and for years was a member of the "mop committee" that cleaned the KC Hall. Nick enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, poker club, helping others and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed feeding the birds and cussing the squirrels when they ate the birds' feed instead of the corn left for them. If the neighbors heard a commotion they knew it was Nick after the squirrels. Nick died on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 79. Those left to honor his memory include many friends, his wife, Shirley; children, Desiree (Gary) Meyer, Nick J Scholer and grandchildren: Tiffany Meyer, Molly (Brad) Sween and Bryce Hickman
