Delmar Gingerich MCGREGOR, Iowa -- Delmar Charles Gingerich, 83, of McGregor, formerly of Muscatine, died on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at his home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 630 Main Street, McGregor, Iowa 52157. The Rev. David Zimmer will officiate services. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012, at the Thornburg - DeVries Funeral Home, 625 Main Street, McGregor, Iowa 52157, and one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Delmar was born on October 30, 1929, on the family farm near Kalona, Iowa, the son of Joe P. and Lula Stutzman Gingerich. He graduated from West Liberty High School where he was very active in track, football, and basketball. He entered the Armed Forces in February 1951. He saw active duty in Korea and received a purple heart. Delmar was transferred to the Reserve in December 1952. lls, Iowa, where he operated a portable feed grinder and mixer before moving to West Liberty. He farmed until 1969 when he and his family moved to McGregor and ran the Holiday Shores Motel. He was a member of the Kiwanis's Club, serving pancakes and chicken gravy. He also served on the McGregor City Council for 8 years. In December 1993 Delmar and Betty moved to their home on 7th Street in McGregor. Delmar was a hard worker, always on the go and he and Betty enjoyed many trips throughout the States. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciate for the many acts of love and support shown during this time and during the many years preceding Delmar's death. Your kindness will be remembered always. His presence will be greatly missed but after a long struggle with Alzheimer's, we are happy he is now at peace. Survivors include his wife, Betty Gingerich; his three children, Peggy Underwood and husband, Randy, of Manawa, Wisconsin, Dan Gingerich and wife, Jill, of McGregor and Dino Gingerich of McGregor; five grandchildren, Josh Wade of McGregor, Nicole Corlett and husband, Robert, of McGregor, Trudie Meyer and husband, Carl, of West Liberty, Danny Gingerich of McGregor and Carrie Gingerich of McGregor; three (and a half) great grandchildren, Gavyn Wade and Addison and MaKenzie Corlett, all from McGregor; one brother; Don Gingerich and wife, Ellen, from Stover, Missouri; he is also survived by numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; one brother; and a son-in-law.
