0, 1934. He preceded her in death on October 17, 1972. She attended school at Morning Sun and Brighton. She was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of the Derexa Rebekah Lodge, No. 129, at Wapello and was a Past Noble Grand. Velma was an active volunteer in the Louisa County Historical Society. Neil and Velma moved to their Wapello farm in 1945. Velma was an active farm wife, participating in work and planning. She took great pride in the appearance of their farmstead and was known for the amount of cannas planted around the farm buildings. She was an expert seamstress and was a 4-H leader. Velma grew up with a love of horses and animals in general. She designed a horse barn with specific safety features on her homestead, "Calico Acres." There was always a dog. Sometimes, it just showed up, but there was always a dog. The last dog, Buddy, was a sensitive companion. You could tell how Velma was feeling by looking at Buddy. She loved animals - any animal was a potential pet. Velma is survived by two children, Sylvia S. Blaesing of Muscatine, and Ronald G. Stout and wife, Joanna, of Salem, Oregon; three grandchildren, Cathy S. Gethmann of Gladbrook, Iowa, Susan L. Malaise of Cedar Falls, and Jennifer Stout Leydens of Colona, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Cara Dawn Gethmann, Kassidy Leydens, Justin Leydens, Eric Malaise, and Ella Malaise; her sister, Helen Davison of Wayland, Iowa, a sister-in-law, Adele Lee Wells of Washington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Roy Wells and Bert Wells.
