James LeRoy Bales, the son of Glen and Darlene Thompson Bales Rupp was born in Adams County, Iowa on January 11, 1948. He passed away at his home in Essex, Iowa on Friday, April 4, 2008, following a bout with cancer at the age of 60 years, 2 months and 23 days. James graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1969. Following graduation, he joined the U. S. Marine Corp serving nearly two years during the Vietnam War. Upon his return home he worked for many years for Ray Stewart Produce in Shenandoah. In April of 1984 James began working for Eaton Manufacturing in Shenandoah as a machinist. James enjoyed working on cars. Preceding him in death were his father and a brother Gary. Survivors include his mother Darlene Rupp of Essex, IA; a half brother, Glen Bales and wife Gloria of Des Moines, IA; a sister Linda Bales of Essex, IA; brothers, Donald Bales of Shenandoah, IA., Richard "Pete" Bales and wife Sherry of Essex, IA and William "Billy" Bales of Essex, IA; stepson Troy Armstrong in Missouri; nieces and nephews; along with other relatives and friends. Adams County, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Vaughn Livingston. Casket bearers were Bob Branson, Gary McAlpin, James Stewart, David Hoyt, Mike Hoyt and Troy Armstrong. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are being directed to the family in James' name or to the charity of the donor's choice.
