Vern LeRoy Carrick, one of three children of Alice (Taylor) and Franklin Earl Carrick, was born near Jamaica, Iowa on August 26, 1925. Vern grew up in Bayard, Iowa and graduated from the Bayard Community High School in 1943. Following school, Vern enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Armadillo. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and returned home to Bayard. On March 2, 1947, Vern and Dorothy Maxine Huston were married at the Bagley United Methodist Church in Bagley, Iowa. They made their first home in Bayard, and were blessed with three children, Joyce, Jim, and Julie. Vern accepted a position with Farm Service Coop, and the family moved to Scranton, Iowa. They later moved to Oakland, Iowa where Vern managed the Farm Service Coop operations. In 1971, Vern and his son Jim opened Carrick Farm Supply in Oakland. Vern was a very personable man who enjoyed his family, his customers, and his employees. In 1986, Vern retired and he and Dorothy continued to live at their Oakland home. lf, water sports, bowling, football, and especially loved to follow his children and grandchildren's activities, attending all their events from football games to dance recitals. Vern's health forced him to move to the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa in August of 2002. Vern and Dorothy had been married 57 years when Vern died at the Myrtue Hospital in Harlan, Iowa on August 13, 2004 at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Vern's body was cremated and private memorial services were held with his family. Vern was preceded in death by his parents; sister Helen Moylan; brother Lee Carrick; and mother and father-in-law Jessie and Boyd Huston. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Oakland, IA; daughters Joyce Sharp of Des Moines, IA and Julie Davis of Nevada, MO; son Jim Carrick and his wife Becky of Oakland; sister-in-law Gladys Betts of Whittmore, IA; brother-in-law Eldon Huston and his wife Jodie of Des Moines; grandchildren Jeff and J.D. Sharp, Jamie Ewalt and her husband Justin, Joni and Abby Carrick, and Curtiss and Jessica Davis; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
