Marie Hopp

Mabel Marie Hopp, one of five daughters of Mary Jane (Brown) Menschel and Otto William Menschel, was born at her parent's farm home in rural Hastings, Iowa on August 18, 1922. She attended country school at Golden Hill and graduated from Malvern High School in 1940. Marie received her Normal Teaching Certificate from the Tabor College in Tabor, Iowa and then began teaching country school. She met Robert Morris Hopp at a Glenwood Homecoming Dance and the two later married at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Hastings on August 20, 1944. They made their home on the Hopp farm northwest of Malvern, Iowa and their marriage was blessed with son, Donald Lee and daughter, Diane Kay. Marie enjoyed being a farm wife, mother and homemaker, and would substitute teach at the Centerline Country School as needed. She was a 4-H leader for the Silver Cloud Club, worked as 4-H Aide, and helped with the exhibits at the Mills County Fair. Marie joined Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood, Iowa in 1946. She enjoyed collecting plates, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, crocheting, refinishing furniture, quilting, and playing bridge. Marie and Bob had been married 58 years when Bob died on March 31, 2003. Marie continued to live at her farm home and remained very active in her church and community. She always kept busy and enjoyed her many activities. Marie was on her way to Quilt Club when she suffered a fall and was hospitalized at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She passed away at the hospital on November 20, 2010, at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 2 days. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Janie and Otto Menschel; husband, Robert Hopp; sisters, Agnes Livengood and husband Lyndol, Cynthia Patrick and husband Victor, and Shirley Slaughter; and brother-in-law Donald "Keith" Hopp. Marie is survived by her son, Donnie Lee Hopp and friend Diane Kay Radford of Glenwood and daughter Diane Schroeder and husband Donnie of Malvern; grandsons, Rob Schroeder and Meg of Glenwood and their boys, Drew and Grant, and Dusty Schroeder and Amber of Erie, CO and their son Dylan; sister Pat Hiller and husband Tom of Council Bluffs, IA; brother-in-law, John Slaughter and wife Sandi of Ames, IA; sisters-in-law, Polly Hopp of Glenwood, and Virginia Moore of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. A memorial fund has been established.
