Effie Iona Hammers, one of thirteen children of Cleo Elise (Harrison) and Robert Lee Good, was born on October 1, 1925 in Glenwood, Iowa. She grew up and attended country school in the Glenwood area. Effie and Wilbur Fisher married and were blessed with six children, Joyce, Michael, Richard, Johnnie, Betsy and Jeffrey. Effie and Homer Lugene Hammers were married on April 21, 1968 in Grants Pass, Oregon and were blessed with two daughters, Nancy and Sheila. Effie's family grew to include Homer's children, Clyde, Marcella, Nathan and Lorie Ann. They lived in the states of Oregon, Louisiana and three years in Texas before making their home near Stanton, Iowa in 2001. Effie attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She worked numerous jobs over the years; at the Glenwood State Hospital School and at Regars Laundry in Glenwood, at a nursing home in Oregon and later as a cook at a nursing home in Shenandoah, Iowa, where she retired. Effie enjoyed sewing and loved quilting, making numerous quilts over the years. Effie moved to the Red Oak Care Center on February 8, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Richard Fisher; step daughter Marcella Hammers; sons-in-law, Howard "Sonny" Stewart and Randy Childs; sisters, Alice, Rosetta, Elsie, Mary, and Betsy; and her brothers, William, Russell, Oscar, Archie, Robert, and Homer. Effie is survived by her husband of 42 years, Homer Hammers of Stanton; children, Joyce Stewart of Rockford, TN, Michael Fisher and wife Dixie of Honey Creek, IA, Johnnie Fisher and wife Donna of Conroe, TX, Betsy Childs of Red Oak, IA, Jeffrey Wesson and wife Dena of Grand Junction, CO, Nancy Packard of Azalea, OR and Sheila Jones and husband Keith of Conroe, TX; daughter-in-law Sandra Franks of Council Bluffs, IA; step children, Clyde Hammers and wife Jeri of Warsaw, MO, Nathan Hammers of Nevada and Lorie Hammers of Tabor, IA; brother Roy Good of Villisca, IA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. A memorial fund has been established.
