Mary Downey

Mary A. Downey, 97 of Keokuk died at 10:00 am on Friday, March 30, 2012 at River Hills Village in Keokuk. She was born on March 25, 1915 in Ft. Madison, IA a daughter to Stowe & Rose Grant Reynolds. Mary graduated from St. Peter's High School in Keokuk in 1933. She worked as a secretary at Hubinger's and retired in 1980. Mary was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and also the Ladies of the Elks. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and an accomplished golfer and bowler. Mary married Bernard J. Downey on February 4, 1935 in Trenton, MO. He preceded her in death. She is survived by seven children: Tom Downey of Cumming, GA, Ralph Downey and his wife Betty of Bourbonnais, IL, Roger Downey of Keokuk, IA, David Downey of Cumming, GA, John Downey of Oxford, GA, Sister Rita Downey of St. Louis, MO and Catharine Wachtel and her husband Phillip of Canton, GA and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson: Brian K. Downey. Visitation will be after 3:00 P.M. on Monday with family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center located at 1212 Concert St. in Keokuk.
