Carl Block

Carl John Block was born on December 27, 1921, to the late Charles and Minnie (Buckholz) Block in Elysian, MN. He was baptized at Bell Tower Lutheran Church in Elysian, and was later confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Lakefield. As a small child, Carl moved to rural Windom with his parents. Carl received his education in the Wilder Schools and graduated in the Class of 1939. In 1941, Carl joined the Army and served during WWII in Africa, Italy and France. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning home, Carl continued farming with his parents and brother, until he retired in 1985. Carl continued working for an area farmer during harvest and planting. On September 14, 1949, Carl was united in marriage to Arlene Schmeling at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Windom. They were blessed with two children, Wayne and Susan. Carl was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom. He also was one of the original members of the Sun Valley Gun Club and an active member until 2011. Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially fishing with his family in Canada.
