Kenneth Edward Overlin, 66, of Olds, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Overlin was born July 25, 1946 in Des Moines, the son of E.P. and Dorothy DeVault Overlin, and raised on a farm south of Mitchellville. He graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1964. On May 2, 1992, he married Donna Hunter Johnson in Des Moines. They lived in Des Moines and Mitchellville, and retired in Olds. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, with a tour of duty in Vietnam, and served in the Army Reserves from 1967 to 1971. He retired in 2006 after working 40 years as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Des Moines. Following his retirement, he and his wife spent the summers working in their yard, gardening, canning, and a new venture, raising goats. They spent the winter months at their condo in Sun City, Arizona. He enjoyed country music, especially the Statler Brothers, and gospel music, especially the Bill Gaither Vocal Band. by his wife; his sons, Tim (Jas) Overlin of Des Moines, Jon (Tizzy) Overlin of Altoona, Bob (Helen) Overlin of Mitchellville, David Overlin of Madison, WI, and Brian Overlin of Des Moines; step-daughters, Kristina Johnson of Des Moines, and Kelly (Dwight) Hultquist of Swedesburg; grandchildren, TJ, Whitney, Autumn, Camryn, Raven, Icesis, Cy, True, and Bellami Overlin; and step-grandchildren, Katelyn and McKenna White; and several aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn brother, a son who died in infancy, and a stillborn daughter. The funeral service for Mr. Overlin will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Elaine Vass will officiate with interment in Burge Cemetery, New London. Military Rites will be presented by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Chapel with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials have been established for the Olds United Church of Christ and HCI Care Services.
