Fern V. Thompson

Fern Vivian Thompson was born March 27, 1928, in LuVerne, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Myrtle (Fosnaugh) Schaffer. She grew up in the LuVerne area and attended country school until her family moved to Algona, where she finished her schooling at Algona High School. Fern later attended training in Ames to work in Food Service. On August 16, 1957, Fern was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Thompson in St. Paul, Minnesota. They lived in Algona and Fern worked in Food Service at the Algona Community School District for 30 years. Fourteen of those years were spent as the Managing Director, she retired in 1993. Fern was a member of the American School Food Service Association on the state and national level and enjoyed traveling to many different parts of the country to their annual meetings. she was a member of the United Methodist Women. Fern died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. She was 84. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert Thompson of Algona; daughter, Judy and husband Don Weber of Algona; grandchildren, Michele and Jeff Jennings, Misty Schneider, Chad Harms, all of Algona and Ryan Harms and wife Brandi of Fenton; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, siblings, Robert Schaffer of Clarion; Mildred Thorsbakken of Emmetsburg; Roxie and Robert Mogler Matthews of Loveland, CO; and numerous special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen Irene in infancy and Alice Shipler and brother, Richard Jack Schaffer.
