Carmen Romeo, 98, of Miami, Florida passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Carmen Romeo was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy on May 11, 1914, son of Pasquale and Antonette (Erecitano) Romeo. Pasquale came to America before Carmen was born and settled in Binghamton, New York selling fruits and vegetables from a cart. At age 7, Carmen and his mother came to the United States to reunite with his father. By the age of 17, Carmen started his barber shop in New York. He left the barber business to become a buyer for Sissons Department Store in Binghamton. He also hosted a radio show and was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He met his wife, Jane, in Binghamton and they were married in 1935. During World War II, Carmen inspected fighter plane propellers for the United States Armed Forces. In 1952 he moved the family to Columbus, Ohio, where he took a position at Moorhouse Fashion and later went to work for Lazarus Department Store. ami, Florida. Mr. Romeo was known for his sense of humor and turning adverse situations into funny scenarios even before he passed away. He always saw the best in everyone. He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jane; and his son, Ronald Romeo. He is survived by his beloved sons, Robert Romeo, Richard Romeo, and Pat Romeo; daughter-in-laws, Dorothy Romeo, Louise Romeo, Connie Romeo and Jan Romeo-Benfield ; loving brother and sister, Fred Romeo and Catherine Frost; niece, Andrea Frost; grandchildren, Cathy Romeo, Mark Romeo, John Romeo, David Romeo, and Patricia Romeo; great-grandchildren, Chad, Amber, Sonia, John Aaron, Layne, Katelyn and Gianna. The family gives special thanks to caregiver, Dahlia Smith, for her selfless, dedicated care over the past several years. Funeral mass on Thursday, December 13th at 11:00 A.M. at The Church of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 100 NE 191st Street, Miami Gardens, Florida 33179. Father Curtis Kiddy will officiate. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will follow at Hollywood Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
