Hubert - Perkins

Hubert Perkins, the youngest of four children of Jennie May (Booth) and George Perkins, was born on June 24, 1915 near Thurman, Iowa. He grew up in Fremont County until his family moved to Glenwood, Iowa in 1933. Hubert graduated from Glenwood High School that same year. He learned the carpenter trade from his brother-in-law, Strodard Adams, while attending high school and after graduating. His parents moved back to Thurman, Iowa in 1937, but Hubert continued with carpenter work in Glenwood. Hubert and Virginia Berneice Brittain were married on September 29, 1940 in Rockport, Missouri. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Dennis Gene, Gary Lee and Sandra Kay. In the early years of their marriage, Hubert worked as a farm laborer. In 1946, they began farming for themselves on a farm north of Tabor, Iowa. In 1956, the family made a brief move to live in California, but after four months, returned to Glenwood in 1957 where Hubert worked as a carpenter for others before starting his own carpenter business. Hubert continued to make his home in Glenwood. He enjoyed working in his garden in the summer and winters were spent reading and putting jigsaw puzzles together. Hubert could always be found at the coffee shop or café. Due to declining health, he moved to the Tabor Manor in Tabor, Iowa in August 2005. Hubert passed away at the Manor on January 14, 2013, at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 20 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jennie Perkins; wife Virginia Perkins; daughter Sandra Simmer; sisters, Marie Bird and husband Russell, Alice Adams and husband Stodard; brother Ralph Perkins and wife Lennis; brother-in-law, Dwight Brittain; and sisters-in-law, Wilma Smith, Dorothy Hauger and husband Edward, and Marilyn Brittain. Hubert is survived by his sons, Dennis Perkins of Albia, IA and Gary Perkins of Kansas City, MO; son-in-law Gary Simmer of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law Delbert Brittain of Glenwood; eleven grandchildren; many great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Memorial fund has been established. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery. Loess Hills Funeral Home of Glenwood in charge of arrangements.
