John "Jack" O'Neill, 80, of Ponca, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska with Father Paul Albenesius officiating. Visitation will begin at the church on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. with a Rosary at 4:00 P.M.,family will be present at 5:00 P.M. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in rural South Sioux City, Nebraska. Jack was born on March 18, 1929 in rural Ponca, Nebraska, the son of Thomas and Mayme (Carpenter) O'Neill. Jack graduated from Ponca High School in 1946. He married Fern Douthitt on July 12, 1949 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska. The couple farmed in rural Ponca for two years. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict as an electronic technician. After an honorabe discharge from the Air Force, Jack resumed farming and also became a rural route mail carrier for many years until his retirement. Survivors include his wife Fern of Ponca, Nebraska; two sons, Patrick O'Neill of Bloomfield, Nebraska and Mark O'Neill of Ponca, Nebraska; one daughter, Anne and her husband Tony Stark of Ponca, Nebraska; four brothers, Leonard and Frank O'Neill, both from Jackson, Nebraska, Donald and his wife Arlene O'Neill of Torrance, California, and Vern and his wife Peg O'Neill of Dallas, Texas; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Mary Louise, one sister, Mildred and two sister-in-laws, Mary and Noma O'Neill.
