Mamie B. Baxter

Mamie was born July 28, 1912 near Fenton, IA to Ole and Serena (Mitchell) Pedersen. The family farmed near Fenton and Ringsted. She graduated from Fenton High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College of Cedar Falls and taught in rural Palo Alto County schools. On May 23, 1934, Mamie married Dale R. Long. They farmed near Ringsted and in 1949 bought a farm in Fairfield Township near Cylinder, Iowa where they raised their family. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew and belonged to the church circle. In 1963 they bought a dairy farm near Menomonie, WI. Mamie moved to Emmetsburg, IA in January of 1970 and was the assistant manager of the Handicapped Workers Activity Center, now known as Horizons Unlimited. On April 27, 1974 Mamie and Leslie G. Baxter were married in Emmetsburg where they resided until the fall of 2002 when they moved into Assisted Living at the Ruthven Community Care Center. Mamie was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, belonged to the church circle and did volunteer work at Lakeside Lutheran Home. hristmas for Kids program. She was very supportive of her children and their activities, and enjoyed her family and friends. She was an excellent homemaker and seamstress and her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, baked goods and Norwegian goodies were special family treats. Mamie is survived by her husband Leslie G. Baxter of Ruthven, three daughters, Marlys (William) Walters of Bella Vista, AR, Gayle (Doyle) Miller of Klamath Falls, OR, and Ardyth (Alfred) Vignes of Cypress, TX; three granddaughters, Junia (Joel) Punt of Orange City, IA; Dr. Janet (Scott) Guthmiller of Iowa City, IA; Dr. Jeanne Hassebroek (Trent) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Brandon and Blair Punt, Katie and Emily Guthmiller and Julia and Jacob Johnson and one niece, Norma Lockwood of Swea City, IA. She is also survived by step-daughters: Doris (Darrel) Malm of Spencer, IA; Lucille (Don) Dammann of Estherville, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant brothers, Peter Alfred and Oscar Silas, one sister, Alma Bleckwenn, son-in-law, Dr. Roy J. Hassebroek and step-sons: Dale and Alvin Baxter.
