John (Johnny) H. Ring was born on July 22, 1935 to John (Jack) and Lillian (Schwake) Ring in Jenkins, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Riceville High School. Lance Corporal Ring was stationed in Camp Pendelton, California, and he served in the Korean War. On January 6, 1957, John married Jean Elise McVinua at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. John worked for General Telephone Company for 35 years. They lived in Mason City, Dubuque, Cresco and Forest City before settling in Emmetsburg in 1960. John was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2295 of Emmetsburg and Bethany Lutheran Church. After retirement, John and Jean vacationed in Arizona during the winter where they visited family and friends. During retirement, John started his hobby of mowing. He enjoyed gardening, and he gave away most of his produce to family and friends. Jean passed away on January 7, 2004 after 47 years of marriage. Though John's heart was broken, he continued to stay active working part-time at Hardware Hank, gardening, having coffee with the guys, mowing lawns and helping just about everyone in town. John is survived by three sons: Mike and his wife, Jodi of Fountain Hills, AZ, Dan and his wife, Lori of Marshalltown, IA and Jeff of Wichita, KS; a daughter, Jolene Cleveringa and her husband, Doug of Sioux Center, IA; three sisters: Lois Ankrum of Winona, MN, Katherine Warburton of Riceville, IA and Sharon Erath of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Berdean Ring of Riceville, IA; brother-in-law, Don McVinua and his wife, Mardell of Storm Lake, IA; daughter-in-law, Mary Engstrom and her husband, Tim of Emmetsburg, IA; 13 grandchildren: Eric (Andrea), Dustin, Brooke, Nicole (Tom), Chris, Travis, Trevor, Jack, Kyle, Megan, Jacob, Kole and Jade; 6 great-grandchildren: Paisley, Keaton, Darby, Camery, Lainey and Jeanae. John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; two brothers, Marvin and Elmer; sister, Reberta; five brothers-in-law: Harold, Gene, Lorell, Roger and Dale; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn.
