URBANDALE, Iowa--Richard Dean Herlein, 76, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, following a battle with cancer.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown on Parkway in West Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2013, and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Camp REECE, P.O. Box 83, Washington, IA 52353 or Muscatine Community College.

Richard was born on February 5, 1937, in Muscatine, the son of Dale and Dorothy Bierman Herlein. He graduated from Muscatine High School and then from the University of Iowa.

He was a Special Education Teacher and consultant for over 40 years including AEA 16 and Muscatine College. Richard received the Richard Herlein Award for Outstanding Teaching by an Adjunct Faculty Member, after receiving the award he was quoted as saying "I couldn't have stayed in the classroom where my heart was without the support of my family."

Richard was a member of St. Boniface Church, NEA, and ISEA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Arlene Herlein of Urbandale; son, Michael Herlein and wife, Deb, of Kentucky; daughters, Cristina Falbo and husband, Sam, of Chicago, Dori Webb and husband, Ron, of Kansas City, son, Troy Herlein of South Carolina, and daughter, Amy Duder and husband, Mike, of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and brother, Jim Herlein and wife, Judy, of Columbia, Missouri; and many other loving relatives and special friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

"Mr. Herlein was my 6th grade teacher at Stanwood, Iowa in the late 50's. He met his wife, Miss Sladek while they were both teaching there. He was a wonderful teacher. Marcia Kroemer Colton."
