Marion Carley, 96, of Avoca, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson with Rev. Eric Meissner officiating. Burial will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in Macedonia. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are directed to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut.
Marion Arthur Carley, son of Arthur Lewellen and Lottie S. (Dye) Carley was born August 10, 1916 on the farm in Keg Creek Township near Macedonia, Iowa. He grew up in Macedonia and graduated from Carson High School in 1934. Following school he went with his brother, Howard to Illinois during the depression where they picked corn by hand for farmers. He later moved back to Macedonia to help on the family farm with his father.
On December 10, 1939 he married Phyllis Hagood in Council Bluffs. The couple rented the Art Snapp home place outside of Carson. In 1943 they welcomed the birth of their first son, Terry. In 1944 the couple moved to the Carley family farm where Marion's two sisters, Lorraine and Gertrude lived with them during the Summer while country school was out. In 1946 they welcomed the birth of their second son, Douglas. The couple continued to farm until 1952. The couple then moved to the Mactier Farm west of Carson to start a cattle feed operation which they operated until 1970. They then moved to Council Bluffs. While living in Council Bluffs they purchased a farm east of Avoca where they farmed until 1980. In July 1982 Phyllis passed away. He then began to work for Morphy Drug Co where he would also retire from after 10 years of employment. In 1989 he married Lucille Anderson. In 2006 the couple moved to Peace Haven Retirement home in Walnut. Lucille passed away in 2009. In 2011 his son, Douglas passed away. Later that year Marion moved to the Avoca Nursing & Rehab Center.
Marion enjoyed following his grandchildren in their sporting activities, playing cards, especially "pitch", loved a good steak, and enjoyed attending the College World Series for nearly 50 years.
Marion was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca and Farm Bureau.
Marion is survived by his son, Terry (Julie) Carley, of Avoca; grandchildren, Jeff ( Stephanie) Carley and Robb ( Laura) Carley both of Treynor, Janae (Matt) Sternberg of Avoca, Jason (Erica) Carley of Bellevue, NE and Jarrod (Jocelyn) Carley of Elkhorn, NE; 11 great grandchildren, brothers, Ernest (Myrna) Carley of Carson and Howard Carley of Princeton, IL; sister, Gertrude Ensign of Arlington, VA; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, wives, Phyllis and Lucille, son, Douglas; sisters, Marie Kayton, Nina Thomas, and Lorraine Norton; and brother, Glenn Carley.
