Jack Horowitz
November 25, 1931 - October 8, 2013

Jack Horowitz passed away in his sleep early Tuesday morning, October 8, 2013 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. Jack was born on November 25, 1931, in Vienna, Austria, where his parents, Josef and Florence, owned a perfume factory; his father was a chemist. Jack received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from City College of New York, and PhD degree in biochemistry from Indiana University. Throughout his studies, Jack was elected to several honorary and professional societies, including Phi Beta Kappa. He came to Ames in 1961 as a new faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry at Iowa State University, where he remained throughout his career. Jack conducted ground-breaking research in the area of structure and function of transfer RNA and ribosomes and protein biosynthesis. Jack served as chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics 1971-74, and he retired from the University in 2000. During his career he was also a visiting professor at Yale University and MIT. Jack was the recipient of several prestigious honors, including the University Professorship Award and the Faculty Citation Award. Upon his retirement he was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus.

In his personal life, Jack was a lover of the arts. He enjoyed theater, performing arts and visiting museums with his wife Carole. Jack loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was an avid stamp collector. He was a passionate fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and many New York professional sports teams, especially the Yankees.

Jack is survived by his wife Carole and their sons Michael (Betsy Clubine and grandchildren Rachel and Lena) of Austin, Texas and Jeffrey (Michelle Segar and grandchild Eli) of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 10th at 2pm at the Ames Jewish Congregation (3721 Calhoun Avenue). A graveside will follow at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
