Glenn Kloes

"My father, Leroy Lintereur, was a friend and colleague of Glenn's. So sad to learn of this just now. Everyone who knew Glenn was grateful to work with him and have him as a friend."

"I started my career in DNR with Glenn in 1974. He was my mentor and became my confidant and good friend. He was full of ideas for wildlife and land management. So often he would say "Hey, Steve, I got an idea!" or "Hey, Steve, why don't we give this a try ?" And so we did, so many times. My time at Shawano and Navarino under Glenn's influence, and what I learned and experienced from him, has guided me my enitre career. I often said: "I learned from the best wildlife technician in the country!" His teaching was not only pragmatic but also philosophical. He saw the woods and fields and marshes and streams and rivers and lakes as an interconneted whole system long before it was popular to do so. His role in helping to initiate the Navarino Nature Center is probably his crowning achievement, next to raising a family. It reflects his love for teaching kids about nature and passing on to future generations his love for wildlife and wild places. What a great success story the NNC has become due to all the folks who shared Glenn's vision and passion. It is an "Epic" conservation success story in Wisconsin due to all who have been involved. Thanks Glenn - for all you've done, and all you have touched. Lv you man ! "

"My condolences to the Kloes Family. Glen was a great co-worker who I worked with on numerous occasions involving many aspects of wildlife management. These were from planting prairie, maintenance of equipment, constructing timber or logging roads, restoring hydrology of wetlands, looking at ideas for the beginning of the Navarino Nature Center, doing surveys, marking timber and many more job duties. He had great devotion to his family and brought the lighter side to get through tough situations at work. While he may have been stumped at projects for a time he always came up with solutions in a common sense way. Glen always had a positive attitude even when computers came onto the scene and when he was frustrated on the learning process from this technology. Later he used it to enhance his knowledge of his family genealogy. Glen was a great teacher of the next generation of Wildlife Technicians and used his mishaps of being stuck or equipment breakdowns as tools to forge forward even when wet and muddy up to his armpits. He was a true friend of wildlife for Wisconsin who would give all his energy to see a project through to the end. Glen was a passionate person who will be missed by all. All of us know he will be serving those in the afterlife to make the world even more special. "

"I think of Glenn every time we teach children down at Glenn's Pond at the nature center. Glenn was a gentle giant. It was a pleasure to know him, and hear the stories of the early years on the Navarino Wildlife Area, and the early years of starting the nature center. "I worked with Glenn for a little while when I was attending Fox Valley Technical College for Natural Resources and did a lot of volunteer work for Shawano DNR. He was a very pleasant man, and nice to be around. Everyone that worked with him had nothing but respect for him, and the and experience that he brought with and shared with others. He will be greatly missed by everyone."

"I went to AV-W High School with Glenn; he was one of my favorite classmates. He could get people laughing in a second with some of his unique comments; we always counted on him to keep us in a happy mood. I especially remember him in typing; his hands were large and he had difficulty getting his fingers to move with speed. It seemed he just could not excel in any "speed tests". One time the whole typing class celebrated when he hit the score of 10 words per minute, but with 5 mistakes!!! We all loved you, Glenn, and hope that you keep everyone in heaven just as happy and smiling as you did your former classmates!!"

"Another one of the "good guys" has left us. Glenn and I hunted, cooked, and did a lot of other things together, both work and non-work related when we were both at Antigo. He always had a smile and a willingness to help out no matter what it was. Heaven has received another good angel. "

"I knew Glenn and his reputation for the better part of 30 years working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. A big man with a big heart, he was honored with the Bureau of Wildlife Management's first annual "Wildlife Technician of the Year" award in 1981. His dedication on the job and special effort given in the support of the Navarino Wildlife Area will not be forgotten. "

"To the Kloes Family: I didn't work with Glenn very often but a little now & then. Of course I saw him at meetings & training sessions & we blew up a few silos together but whatever the circumstances he was always a positive force and a very pleasant person to work with. Very dedicated and he always had a new idea to try and was pretty creative. He worked with me on the peat fires in Killsnake WA (some very long days & nights!). He was instrumental in getting the irrigation equipment in for us to flood the area to put the fires out and of course blowing the big hole in the river bottom to use as a water source. I enjoy remembering the time we were blowing up old farm silos on one of the wildlife areas & a local farmer asked if we could blow an old apple tree stump out of the ground for him. We said no as of course it was totally against all work rules, even common sense indicated it a no-no as it was close to the house and farm outbuildings. He persisted and told us of all his experience blowing stumps "in the old days" to convince us it would be OK. Reluctantly we gave in, always looking for a chance to improve our local public relations image. So after deciding on the appropriate size & placing of the dynamite charge we pulled back to observe the results of our collective efforts. Needless to say the stump, instead of just tipping out of the ground as planned, went airborne instead. Pretty high actually, the sunlight playing on the stump and mass of roots slowly rotating high in the air created quite an artistic affect. With at least the two of us DNR types holding our breaths, I can't speak for the farmer, seeing our careers held in suspended animation over the farm buildings we waited to see where the slowly rotating stump would come to earth. Well, target earth ended up being dead center through the roof of the milkhouse! After a few moments of silence, the farmer. seemingly accepting his role in choosing the charge and placement said, "Well, that roof needed replacing anyway!" Glenn and I departed as quickly as we could, fully expecting repercussions and disciplinary action down the road. Thankfully they never materialized! Such was a work day in the field with Glenn!
