Mortimer "Jay" Sloan
January 22, 1927 - January 24, 2014

Mortimer "Jay" Sloan, of Lily, died Friday, January 24, 2014 at KHTCR-Eastview. He was 87 years old. He was born on January 22, 1927 in Flint, Mich. a son of the late Mortimer Sloan Sr. and Ernestine (Goff) VanRiper. He graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College Academy in Berrien Springs, Mich.
A World War II veteran Mr. Sloan served in the United States Navy from September 17, 1945 to August 17, 1956.
On June 19, 1949 he married Delores Owens, they had five children, Larry, Nancy, Susan, Teena and Josh. The couple later divorced. He married Kim Jeske on March 25, 1985 in Janesville and they had two children, Trevor and Elaine.

With his buddy, Dale Carson, he drove truck for a number of years. He also was a grade school teacher for the Moline, ILL and Onalaska, Wis School Districts and at West Suburban Elementary in Illinois.

For the majority of his working years he was a herdsman for farmers all across the United States.

In 1996 he moved to Lily. He enjoyed raising chickens, becoming known locally as the "Egg Man".

He is survived by his wife, Kim of Lily; three sons, Larry (Sandy) Sloan of Fall River, Josh (Melanie) Sloan of Glasgow, KY, and Trevor Sloan of Madison; four daughters, Nancy Stronach of Madison, Susan (Steve) Reed of OR, Teena George of Milwaukee and Elaine (Matt) Crandall of Stevens Point; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gordon (Mattie) Sloan of Lincoln, NE; and a sister, Donna (Norman) Wilson of Macon, GA.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Sloan; two sisters, Burdetta Sloan and Barbara VanScoyk; and ex-wife, Delores Sloan.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Rev. Wes Jedras officiating. Burial will take place in Lily Cemetery in the Spring. Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
